Evolution Korea<br /><br />The financial crisis that struck Asia forced a major reappraisal of the old system of business-government alliances and public management of private risks. In Korea, this meant a change in the model of development.<br /><br />In a controversial move, South Korea's government has asked textbook publishers to ignore calls to remove examples of evolution from high school science books. This includes the evidence for evolution of horses and the avian an ancestor Archaeopteryx.<br /><br />1. Evolution and Religion<br /><br />A group of creationists in South Korea has successfully convinced textbook publishers to exclude evidence of evolution in high school science textbooks. This was the result of a campaign run by the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an affiliate of the Korea Association for Creation Research, which wants to rid biology textbooks of "atheist materialism." His colleagues backed him from across the country who gathered into an organization called Evolution Korea to organize an anti-textbook petition.<br /><br />Some researchers are concerned that the STR will be spread to other regions of the globe, where the belief in creationism has been on the rise. The letter to Nature warned that the anti-evolution movement will push for textbook revisions in other countries, especially those with large Christian and Muslim populations.<br /><br />South Korea has a particularly significant cultural context for the evolution debate. 26 percent of the country's residents belong to a religious denomination, and most practice Christianity or Buddhism. Ch'ondogyo teaches that the human being is one with Hanulnim, the God of Sun, and that divine blessings are achievable through the good works of one's.<br /><br />All of this has provided fertile ground for the spread of creationism. Multiple studies have shown students with religious backgrounds to be more hesitant to learn about evolution than those who don't. The causes behind this are not clear. Students with a religious background may be less familiar with the theories of science, making them more susceptible to creationists and their influence. Another reason could be that those with a religious background may view evolution as a belief system that is atheistic, making them less comfortable.<br /><br />2. Evolution and Science<br /><br />In recent years, scientists have been concerned about anti-evolution initiatives in schools. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that over 40% of Americans believe that biological evolution is a lie and that a belief in it would conflict with their faith-based beliefs. Many scientists believe that despite the success of creationism, the best way to combat this movement is to educate the public on the evidence for evolution.<br /><br />Scientists have a duty to educate their students about science and the theory of evolution. They also need to educate the public on the process of scientific research and the way in which knowledge is confirmed. They must also explain how scientific theories are often challenged and revised. However, misconceptions about the nature and purpose of research can fuel anti-evolution views.<br /><br />For instance, some people are able to confuse the term "theory" with the common meaning of the word - a guess or guess. It is expected to continue this growth in the coming years.<br /><br />The current administration is faced with many challenges. One of the most significant is the inability to come up with a coherent policy to deal with the economic crisis. The crisis has revealed shortcomings in the policies of the country particularly its dependence on exports and foreign investment that may not last.<br /><br />Since the financial crisis has destroyed the confidence of investors, the government needs to rethink its economic strategy and come up with alternatives to increase domestic demand. It will also have to revamp the incentive, monitoring, and disciplining systems currently in place to ensure a stable financial environment. This chapter provides a number of scenarios on how the Korean economy might grow in a post-crisis environment.<br /><br />4. To overcome this issue, I use a longitudinal data set that lets me control for year and state fixed effects and the individual-level variation in teacher beliefs regarding evolution.<br /><br />Teachers who are more comfortable in teaching evolution report fewer internal barriers. This is in line with the idea that faculty who are more confident are less likely to be hesitant about teaching about evolution in the classroom. They may also be more inclined to employ strategies such as a reconciliatory approach known to increase undergraduate students' acceptance of evolution.<br /><br />
