World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a method to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.

Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specific amount.

Item Level

When an item is upgraded, its basic stats are increased in value. This value is the sum of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to the variety of perks that have to be modified to upgrade an item.

It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can use as PvP is restricted at lower levels. Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment players can look at the level of an item. It's a measure of the item's condition and its quality. The level of an item can be used to compare items when looking at a vendor's inventory.

On PC, you are able to see the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then entering /itemlevel into chat.

There are several theories about how the item level calculation is made. One theory suggests that the item level is calculated by an equation that determines the worth of an item's stats really are. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different worth and that sockets have gems that increase the value of the item overall. This can result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is typically very close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this is not the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, because the level of the area the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have higher the ilvl than items from lower level instances.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat mods on an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by a player's level.

Upgrades to an item may increase its stats. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. A white or grey item for instance, can only be upgraded once however, items with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times with more expensive costs.

Another way to change the stats on an item is through affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes are used to give items additional damage or special abilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs), or to distinguish them by naming them.

Currently, all affixes can be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circling arrows. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold and items which can be added to the upgrade gauge in the same way as the other rerolling options.

In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can also choose which stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, however every item is guaranteed to have at least one stat within the range, unless it is an exclusive item or a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that can be modified by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or selecting which stats to boost. Similar to base equipment, it would have to be done per item, and the item comparison interface will not show all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the odds of item discoveries as well as the properties that appear on loot drops, and the intensity of the properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players the chance to acquire better gear in earlier waves and is therefore more useful in the early game than in later ones, as most players prioritize greater weapon scaling and defense over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade probability which increases with each level and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can then be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to give +40 Luck, or to increase the luck of an item up to 140.

Additionally, certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon can be used to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be bought from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their success rate or prevent them from losing an item if the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on the extent to which the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%..

The Luck of an item may affect the success of an upgrade. Every item has a base success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases that chance by an additional five percent.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects may be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
