bedside cot mattress (or next-to-me crib) is a bassinet-style crib that can be attached to the side of your bed which allows you to reach over and comfort your baby without needing to get out of bed. Some models come with an incline feature that helps relieve reflux.

You should only put your baby to bed in a bassinet or crib if the mattress is flat and firm. This will lower the risk of him suffocating.

Cot

Bedside cots, also referred to as bassinets or co-sleepers are a great way to keep your baby close to you during the early months. The cots are made to fit close to your bed to allow you to easily carry your baby to you to feed them at night or soothe them back to sleep. These are also ideal for mums who have just had a c-section.

There are a number of different models available however one that stands out is the Arm's Reach Clear-Vue. This compact play yard has four sides. Two of them are long and may be removed from the way using Velcro to allow you to easily access your baby's nighttime feeds.

Another alternative is the Baby Hug 4 In 1 Air, which also has an option to drop down and be converted into recliner. This is an excellent choice for toddlers and infants and offers the flexibility to alter your baby's sleeping position as they develop.

Red Nose recommends that your baby sleep in their own cot between birth and six months. This is due to the fact that the risk of SIDS is increased when babies sleep with adults.

Cots are, on the other hand are more secure than bassinets, as they have a fixed-height that prevents a gap between the mattress of your child and an adult bed. Cots are usually larger and can be converted to full-size or toddler beds as your baby grows. This could save you money.

When looking for a new baby bedside cot, it's important to consider your budget and the size of your bedroom or nursery when choosing a cot. Keep in mind that cots can be more expensive than bassinets, but they can be an investment that will last for a long time and can be used by your child as she grows.

You'll also need a mattress for your crib or cot. It's vital that the mattress is flat, firm and ventilated to help your baby have a restful night's sleep and decrease the risk of developing pressure sores or breathing problems. Mattresses used in second-hand stores can increase your child's SIDS risk. Look for a brand that is endorsed by the CPSC that complies with current guidelines. Be careful not to overstuff the crib or use duvets or bumpers, pillows or baby positioners. They could create a suffocation risk. A comfortable, airy mattress for your baby should be able to support the spine. There are a variety of mattresses for babies on the internet, from budget choices to more luxurious brands. If you're unsure, visit a store and try some out for yourself.
