ADD and Treatment

ADD and its treatment are often related to issues at work, school or home. The psychiatric disorder may be difficult for doctors to diagnose and treat.

The psychiatric disorder is often referred to as attention hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD. Mental health professionals use the SPECT brain imaging method to determine ADHD.

The symptoms of classic ADD include being easily distracted, forgetful and disorganized. Medications like stimulants and antidepressants can help.

Limbic ADD

The most common form of ADD, also known as classic ADD or hyperactive-impulsive ADD, is characterized by inattention, a lack of organizational skills, difficulty staying on task, and trouble with memory. Brain scans reveal that those with this type of ADD have normal activity in the prefrontal cortex both at rest and during concentration, however they have reduced activity in the cerebellum and basal ganglia which produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter which enhances focus, motivation and a sense of calm. This type has a shorter attention span, and is easily distracted by sounds or other stimuli and is unable to switch attention. They have difficulty falling asleep, and often wake up in the middle of the night, battling anxiety. They are easily frustrated and often get angry.

Ring of Fire ADD is defined by all the standard ADD symptoms however, it also has a difficulty in shifting their focus from one thought to another and shifting their focus from one task to the next. They are sensitive to light, noise, and touch and they talk too fast and are impulsive and easily triggered into mean behavior. They are susceptible to moodiness, low energy and anger. They are also prone to getting stuck in negative thoughts and guilt feelings.

Limbic ADD can be confused with depression, however it is different than depression because it has increased activity in the limbic region of the brain (the area that sets our emotional tone and controls the level of happiness or sadness we feel) and decreases activity in the prefrontal cortex both at rest and during concentration. It is a condition which can be treated with supplements like L-tryptophan 5-HTP inositol, saffron, and saffron that improve alertness, focus and mood as well as mental clarity. They also use amino acid GABA to reduce neural activity and prevent nerve cells from over-firing or firing in a erratic manner; and liver support.

It is essential to differentiate between ADD and mood disorders such as Bipolar Disorder, which can cause irritability, frustration and low self-esteem. The difference is that ADD with Limbic Symptoms is more prone to constant anger and frustration over time, while Bipolar Disorder symptoms tend to manifest in waves.

Overfocused ADD

Over-focused ADD patients tend to get caught up in negative thoughts and behavior that result in excessive worry. They exhibit rigid behavior patterns similar to those of people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which is why it's often incorrectly diagnosed. They can become angry when asked to switch their attention between activities and may respond with a resentful or argumentative behavior.

They tend to be irritable and their irritability can be due to a low-grade chronic sadness or negative mood. They may also experience difficulties learning, struggle with memory issues, or experience severe anger and aggression.

People who have hyper-focused ADD might be rigid when it comes switching tasks and can become absorbed in their hobbies or work. They might forget appointments and deadlines at work or at home and may not finish their homework or chores. They may also be extremely stubborn and resentful when punished by their teachers or parents.

Children with overfocused ADD can be angry and stubborn, and might throw temper tantrums when their interests aren't accepted. They may be obsessed with particular activities like video games, toys, and toys. They also have trouble expressing their feelings, and can be extremely sensitive to criticism or rejection.

This type of ADD is more common in children and is difficult to diagnose. Children who show this behavior are often unable to comprehend that their issues are caused by an inability to change their attention from one task to another. This is the reason it's crucial to seek the help of a professional, as children with this kind of behavior are more likely to be misdiagnosed by family physicians and even psychologists. This type of ADD is usually treated using modifications to diet, supplements and cognitive-behavioral therapy. This type of ADD is hard to treat, even with stimulant medication, because it can increase the intensity of hyperactivity. Functional neuroimaging is sometimes used to identify the seven distinct kinds of ADD and is especially useful for diagnosing hyperfocused ADD.

Anxious ADD

Many people with ADD have high levels of anxiety. Comorbidity, also known as having more than one disorder at the same time, is common and can affect up to half of those with ADD/ADHD. Stress and anxiety can mirror the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. A misdiagnosis can result in inappropriate treatment and anger.

Anxious ADD may cause problems at work, in school or with social situations. This kind of ADD may lead to low achievement and feelings of inadequacy. People with anxiety ADD avoid challenging tasks or events because they fear they won't succeed.

They also fear being criticised or judged. They hide their problems to others. These people can be so stressed and anxious that they experience panic attacks. They can be extremely life-threatening and cause sweating, a pounding heart and breathing difficulties. In contrast to Classic ADD, those with Anxious ADD have increased activity in their basal ganglia and the amygdala. These organs operate on an instinctual basis and prioritize safety. This shuts down PFC and makes it difficult for those with this condition to concentrate.

If a person suffers from anxiety and ADD/ADHD, the symptoms they experience are more difficult to treat. This is because treatment programs for ADD/ADHD, that are designed to increase brain activity, can actually increase anxiety among people with anxiety-related ADD.

Amen Clinic psychiatrists utilize functional neuroimaging such as SPECT scans to determine where in the brain low and/or higher levels of activity are occurring. This helps them distinguish between the seven types and determine the best method of treatment.

A psychiatrist will take an entire medical record and conduct a physical exam to determine if a patient has ADD/ADHD. He or she might also inquire about the patient's mood and behavior in order to evaluate the patient's overall functioning. Sometimes, medication is used to treat the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. However, in most cases, patients require other therapies, such as cognitive behavior therapy and nutrition, exercise sleep strategies, and desensitization. This will help improve their ability to control their emotions and their overall performance.

Temporal Lobe ADD

This type of ADD affects the temporal lobe within the brain which is responsible for memory and mood. add in adults treatment suffering from this kind of ADD struggle to process and store information and experience mood swings and have extreme anger or aggression issues. They might also experience sensory issues such as feeling deja vu, seeing shadows or objects change shape or hearing sounds that others don't hear. They can be irritable, sensitive and easily overstimulated.

Symptoms of this type of ADD are similar to those in Classic ADD, including short attention spans disorganization, difficulty in following instructions or staying on task and procrastinating. This kind of ADD does not cause hyperactivity or impulsivity. This kind of ADD is more common in females. People suffering from this type of ADD might have low levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter, which can cause feelings of depression and low self-regulation. The symptoms include insomnia, anger and anxiety.

In this instance QEEG scans of the ADD brain show that those with Overfocused ADD have difficulty shifting gears. They are experiencing normal activity in the anterior cingulate region (the brain's "gearshifter"). They aren't able to shift from one thought or task to another and get stuck in negative thoughts and behaviors.

This is a kind of ADD which means that people are highly motivated and productive but they also have a tendency to get distracted by non-essential or unimportant tasks. They can lose track and become embarrassed or tired due to their actions. They may have a difficult relationship with others due to their tendency to be hyper-active or reactive, and have a hard time managing multiple tasks or working with others. In certain situations, they could experience anxiety or depression. They may be prone hallucinations or panic attacks. Medications for this type of ADD aren't usually recommended since they do not address the root cause of symptoms.
