3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeled buggy is ideal for off-road terrain and provides the most comfortable ride for infants. They are also simpler to push and maneuver than a four wheel buggy, particularly those with slings made of fabric or modular seat units, which are tightly positioned in the frame to provide the most efficient geometry and distribution of weight.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are very stable, making them an excellent choice for off-road walking (especially when they are equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). These types of buggys typically have large front tires that can withstand bumps, kerbs and rough terrain. Some even come with a lockable front wheel for extra stability on uneven terrain.

It is important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies have a lower center of gravity than the 4-wheeled versions which means they can topple over more readily. However, the most reliable 3-wheel pushchairs have perfect geometry and engineering to ensure that they remain solid in all conditions. They should be able of turning on a dime and be able to steer with one hand, and have 360o swivelling front wheels which makes them ideal for maneuvering and navigating challenging terrain.

For really tricky surfaces be sure to choose models with air-filled tyres, also known as pneumatic tyres, which are designed to work on non-paved tracks and should cope with rocks, mud, and more. Many all-terrain buggies come with a swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked for added stability when tackling very rough terrain.

A 3-wheel stroller is an ideal option for runners or those who like to walk fast and uphill, particularly in the event that you're planning to connect an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent model. It features an incline-reclining seat that is flat, with a 5-point harness, and plenty of storage space for everything you need (plus a 50+ extendable sun hood). It is lightweight, compact, and suitable for use starting at birth. It can be used in conjunction with a car seat or a carrycot. It also handles a bit of light jogging but isn't intended for serious joggers.

Weight

If you're seeking a buggy that can handle difficult terrain, then you'll need one with large wheels. They are designed to tackle cobbles, grass and dirt tracks easily and still provide a smooth ride. They are also ideal for jogging, as they come with built-in suspension and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. However, they are quite heavy to push.

The best 3-wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheeler is highly maneuverable because it has 16 rear wheels as well as an adjustable front wheel that locks. It has air tyres, that require occasional pumping and it can be used to carry a child up to the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler enjoyed the design of the seat and she found it easy to steer with her 3-year-old son on board.

The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another great option. It has an adjustable handlebar, a top-quality hood that provides 50+ UV protection and a high quality hood. It is also easy to move kerbs up and down, and can fit into the boot of a car that is small. It can also be used as a pram that comes with an infant car seat for newborns and toddlers.

Fabric slings are positioned inside the frame and not on top of the frame like modular seats. 3 wheel pushchair has a lower centre of gravity that is at the ideal height, making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you cannot underestimate the amount of times you'll have to do that as new parents!)

Seating

The capacity for 3 wheelers is impressive and there are many different choices to choose from. The included carrycot plus is ideal for a baby (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a cozy and comfortable lay-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy). Older babies and toddlers will appreciate the large and comfortable seat unit that has adjustable ventilation. It's important to note that these seats aren't fully reclined however they can be adjusted to the lowest position that will still allow your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.

A fabric sling is also available. It's a benefit that it is located inside the frame instead of on top as a modular seat. This creates a lower center of gravity with perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this style of seat dealt with obstacles.

This type of buggy comes with an enormous basket, along with other features that are useful like an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal and a few innovative lights for visibility that can be positioned on the front of the passengers to increase safety on rough terrain.

If you're looking for a buggy that will grow along with your family it's the sport(tm), a world-first that can take in a newborn and then be modified to fit two or three children as they grow. All within one footprint.

Storage

The 3-wheeled frame makes a buggy more stable to push with one hand, and it's also great for handling rough terrain. However, it does mean that the basket won't hold the same amount as a 4-wheeled buggy.

A top-quality ATP will feature pneumatic tyres, a padded grip for added comfort, and a superb suspension. It is also equipped to carry a carrycot and car seat which means you can use it right from birth.

MFM's reviewers have noticed that the 3-wheeler frame can't fit through all the doors in their homes or small car booties - make sure to check the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded prior to purchasing in case you're concerned about space.

Look for a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the best choice for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the top of them that can be used as a single seat from day dot, and then transforms into twin buggies once your baby starts walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more enjoyable. They are commonly used on pushchairs such as the Phil & Ted’s Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an exceptional ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres on the Phil & Ted's Sport made it simple for her to negotiate the kerbs as well as other obstacles.

These tyres can sometimes prove difficult to maintain and will need to be filled regularly. They are also more prone to punctures than foam tyres so it is essential that you have repair kits with spare tubes and a pump handy when out and about with your buggy.

PU tyres can be found on more pushchairs than air-filled tyres, yet they're just as robust. PU tyres are easily identified by their matte finish and supple feel. They also slide easily on even and tied surfaces.

It's usually possible to identify the distinction between air-filled and PU tyres by running your hand over each one, if it feels firm, then it's a rubber tyre, and If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also test whether your buggy comes with PU tyres by sliding them onto a flat, clean surface. They should roll easily and fit comfortably into wheel hubs.

Foam tyres can withstand the rough terrain that comes with high-performance buggies. This can make your buggy less stable since the foam loses its springy quality. These tyres also make a lot of noise, as they make a lot noise when you turn or drive around the town.
