They attach to your bed so that you can reach out and comfort or feed your child in the middle night. They're also great for mothers who are recovering from a c section. There are many things to consider before investing in one.

If you're shopping for a bedside crib ensure you're buying an item that is in line with current safety standards. A number of cribs from the past have been recalled because they allow babies to fall in gaps between the mattress and the sides of the crib, or they could pose a risk of strangulation and entrapment. Check that your chosen model is compliant with the new BS EN 1130:2019 safety requirement which was introduced in November 2020.

The new rules prohibit cribs for bedside use from having sides that completely drop down. The majority of models have 'half-height walls that allow your child to lie beside your bed, but also offer a more secure protection since they are a bit beneath your mattress. All of the models on our list conform to these new requirements and include the Graco Pack 'n Play on the Go and the Chicco Lullago, which were both shortlisted in the Mother&Baby Awards 2017.

It's also important to ensure that the crib you're considering is secure enough to be attached to your bed and is anchored correctly. This is particularly important if you intend to use the crib with a sidecar sleeping system, such as the Graco Pack 'n Play On The Go or the Graco BassiNest Premiere which were both shortlisted for the Mother&Baby Awards.

It is also important to remember that the crib should only be used for sleeping purposes and should not be used in conjunction with bedding or other accessories, like blankets, pillows toys or stuffed animals. Official safe sleep advice from the Lullaby Trust and the AAP is that babies should only rest in their own bed space in their crib or cot and not on an adult bed or any other type of mattress or soft furnishing.

Comfort

A bedside crib will allow you to keep your child close during the night, without having to take the possibility that they could be shared with other babies. This can increase the chance of SIDS. You can also reach over to soothe your baby without having to get out of bed in the middle night. It's a good alternative to a Moses Basket or infant bassinet that is safe, convenient and comfortable for your new baby and babies until 6 months old.

The most effective models have good breathability and slats that are wide enough and open enough to allow airflow. They also feature an opening or window that can be rolled up or down when needed. It's easy to change the diaper of your baby or nurse them, or examine them at night. Some models even come with a swaddle sack to help you with a safe sleep routine.

You want a model that is lightweight and compact when folded, making it easy to move around the house or take away with you. It should also be easy to clean, and come with a an easily washable and removable mattress cover. A pocket on the other side is handy for storing spare nappies and baby clothes.

Some cribs for bedside use mattresses, while others need to purchase separately. Be sure to consider whether the crib is rocking, can be folded flat to store, or comes with bags. Check the price and see what bedding is included in the crib. It is often necessary to buy separate sheets for your child's cot at bedside.

Style

Bedside cribs are a fantastic option for new mums. They let them monitor their baby at night and during diaper changes without getting out of their bed. They're also great for helping babies settle after a c-section or when recovering from other medical conditions, such as reflux or colic.

The ideal crib for your bed is contingent on your lifestyle and preferences. Be aware of safety features and if you are able to take your baby out of the crib to feed or calm them. Also, check if the crib has any extras, such as rocking capabilities. Consider the height and dimensions of your bed to ensure that any crib you choose will be able to fit comfortably.

Bedside cribs are cheaper than Moses Baskets, but they do have some great features, such as breathable mesh and see through sides, reflux incline option and a height that can be adjusted. The Tutti Bambini CoZee is our favourite, as it combines both style and practicality into the perfect co-sleeper. It comes in three colours with stylish oak legs to fit into any bedroom. It's also easy to put together and fold up, and comes with a handy bag for trips to the grandparents.

Some cribs come with side panels that can be lowered down to allow you to touch your baby during the day, and for a safer co-sleeping environment, but then appear again at night. The Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Co-Sleeper, for instance, comes with this feature, although one of our MFM home testers found it tricky to use at first.

You must ensure that the bedding you use for a crib beside a bed is properly fitted. There should not be gaps or other gaps, which could cause an air suffocation. This is why a lot of cribs have an adjustable mattress, however you can purchase suitable sheets at a variety of retailers. Avoid second-hand mattresses because they will wear out and become worse with age increasing the chance of SIDS.

Bedside cribs are also much lighter and more portable than Moses baskets which makes them much easier to move from room to room or take with you during holidays. The best bedside cradles are small enough to fit into bags so that you can take them on short trips.

Convenience

Bedside cribs are great for parents and babies as they let you see your baby at night without the danger of them falling off the mattress or suffocating. It's important to keep in mind that the Lullaby Trust, NHS and other sleep guidelines that are official recommend you only co-sleep your baby with them for the first six months with a separate mattress in the same room to decrease the chance of SIDS.

Based on the model you choose the bedside crib could have features that make it more comfortable. For example, one of the top-rated models in our MFM home tests swivels and adjusts height, making it easy for you to reach in and pick up your little one. This model has a sidewall that dips down. One MFM home tester reported that this allowed her to have a'simple access" to soothe their child.

Certain models include extra features like a rocking function (great for babies with a lot of fuss), or incline settings that help with reflux. These are helpful for children with a condition that can cause reflux, however, your newborn should be sleeping on an even, firm mattress to avoid suffocation or overheating.

When selecting a fabric take into consideration how easy it is to clean. Make sure the fabric is machine washable and comes with a waterproof protector to keep away leaky nappies and drips. Some cribs come with a fitted sheet that makes it easier to wash and change.

Other things to consider are how easy it is to build and how compact when folded away. Make sure it's easy to attach to your bed and whether it comes with a bag to take it with you on your travels. Consider if the product has additional features like a tummy-tilt or the capability to transform it into an oversized Moses basket for older children. This is a great feature when travelling.
