Choosing a Baby Crib

The process of designing a nursery can be an exciting time, but choosing the right crib is among the most important decisions you will make. The crib that your baby sleeps in will have a major impact on their health and development regardless of the style of the slats or the mattress height.

Be aware that nails and bolts can be loose in time, so make sure you check your crib hardware regularly. Do not place your crib near blinds or drapes that hang because they could pose a strangulation risk for your baby.

Size

When you are looking for a crib, size is an important aspect. A crib should be large enough to accommodate a sleeping infant but small enough that you are able to reach your child to listen to them. It should be strong enough to withstand daily wear and tear.

The majority of cribs are constructed of metal or wood, and are fitted with sides that are slatted. These features allow caregivers to view the baby from various angles and promote airflow. Cribs can be used from birth until your child is about two years old. older, at which point they will need to be moved into a toddler bed.

Most cribs are equipped with a mattress support height that can be lowered or raised as your baby develops. The lowest setting is ideal for newborns. The highest setting is for babies who can sit up or crawl. Be sure to check the inside of your crib to be sure that the mattress fits, as the slatted design of most cribs may leave tiny gaps that could be dangerous for your baby.

Some manufacturers offer non-standard cribs and mattresses that comply with the same safety standards of full-size cribs. These include play yards and portable infant beds and bassinets. These cribs are smaller than the standard cribs and have solid or mesh sides.

If you opt for a crib that is not standard, make sure you review the manufacturer's guidelines for mattress size recommendations. There could be specifications that differ from the standard crib size of 52 inches long and 28 inches wide. Also, you should be sure to check the distance between the crib mattress and the crib to ensure that it is not greater than 1 inch. This is the most safe distance.

A waterproof cover will protect your baby's bed from spills and accidents. Choose a cover with an antimicrobial barrier that reduces bacteria, and an anti-allergenic layer that blocks allergens.

If you're thinking about buying a crib with drop sides, be aware that they were linked to 32 infant deaths between 2000 and 2010, and have been banned in the US since. If you do decide to buy a drop-side crib or get one as a gift make sure you remove it when your baby is 35 inches tall or has the ability to get out.

Safety

A crib for your baby is the safest place for your child. It is not only an area to rest, but also where you can be able to see them and hold them frequently. There are a variety of crib models and brands available on the market. However, all must meet certain safety standards. These standards are set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and they make sure that cribs you purchase are safe for your baby.

Before you place your child in the crib ensure that the crib is clean and free of dust and dander. Also, take out any toys or stuffed animals that may fall out of the crib. Also, do not use any pillows or blankets inside the crib; these can cause death by suffocation. Instead, you should use a mattress pad and a fitted sheet.

Some commenters suggested that cribs must comply with the formaldehyde emission standards outlined in the Formaldehyde Standards for Wood Products Act. L. 112-199), and cribs made from composite wood should be tested to ensure that they meet the standards. Although these requirements don't directly apply to cribs, the CPSC has determined that it is appropriate to demand that cribs and other furniture constructed of composite wood meet the requirements of this important new law.

Others suggested that the new crib standard should contain a requirement to retighten fasteners between dynamic tests. We strongly disagree with this idea. The dynamic tests - such as the shake test and the vertical mattress support impact test are designed to mimic and accelerate the use and abuse of cribs by children. Loose screws are the second leading cause of fatalities in cribs.

Other comments were based on the EWS incident information. The data shows that the two most frequent crib dangers are unsafe mattresses and drop-sides. We therefore decided to focus on these concerns in the new rulemaking and to incorporate the performance standards that are already included in the existing mandatory standard by reference. By incorporating the performance standards by reference we can ensure that crib safety is maintained consistently and efficiently.

Style

It's a satisfying and exciting experience to design the nursery of your baby's. The crib is the focal point of any nursery, so you should select one that fits your style and complements the decor. If you're looking for a modern and minimalist style or more traditional, there's a wide selection of chic cribs to pick from. There are options for everyone's budget, from the cheapest to upscale. Make sure the crib you choose meets all safety requirements.

A crib is a small bed that is specially designed for babies and infants. It is constructed of durable materials like wood, and has slatted wall panels to allow for safe ventilation. Cribs can be larger and more expensive than bassinets, but offer greater functionality during the initial three years of your child's life.

There are a variety of crib designs that are available, however all must meet safety standards. For instance the crib slats must not be more than 6 centimeters apart (that's about the width of a soda bottle), and you should not use ornamental cutouts or patterns in the footboard or headboard.

In addition, the mattress must fit comfortably inside the crib's opening. This is because any gaps between the crib and mattress can cause babies' arms and legs to become entangled. A lot of cribs have bars for stability to help keep the mattress in place. If your crib doesn't include stabilizer bars, you'll need to purchase an additional mattress pad for support.

A mattress that is low-level is another advantage of a good crib that prevents toddlers from climbing over the crib's edge. This is a fantastic feature for parents with children who are smaller or rooms that are small in size. However, it is important to measure the mattress height before making your purchase. The corner of most mattresses will list the crib's maximum and minimum mattress heights.

If you want a crib that grows with your child, you should consider purchasing a convertible crib. These cribs can be converted into a toddler bed, a daybed and even a full-size bed. Certain cribs, such as the Babyletto Hudson 4-in-1 and Delta Children Tribeca 3-in-1, come with conversion kits. The rest will require an extra purchase.

Budget

While the majority of cribs are priced at hundreds of dollars, some cribs are affordable. The Graco Classic 4 in 1 Crib costs less than 200 dollars and is rated 5 stars by BabyCenter and Baby Bargains. It also has a medium-height profile, which makes it easy to take your baby into and out.

The Munchkin Brica travel pod is another crib that is budget-friendly. This portable play and sleep option is easy to set up and folds down in just a few minutes. It can be used inside or out on a patio or deck. It is suitable for infants weighing up to 15 pounds. It is not a permanent sleeping solution, however, because your baby will outgrow it in approximately six months.

There are also budget-friendly cradles and bassinets that can be used for the first few weeks to keep your baby snug and close. Although they're more expensive than a standard crib they are also smaller and easier to move around. However, they're only a short-term sleeping solution and your baby is likely to outgrow them prior to their first birthday.

A quality crib should have a sturdy, secure mattress support that can be adjusted into four different positions, based on the growth of your baby. It must be low enough for you to reach in and out of it easily, especially if you're under 5'5 inches. Some cribs have posts that are higher than 1 8 inches above the mattress opening which can cause your child to become entrapped as they play or climb.

Some cribs come with separate changing rooms that can help diapering a bit more convenient and quicker. Although they are convenient however, they take up more space than traditional cribs and might not be the best option for smaller nurseries.

It is also important to consider the materials the crib is constructed of. Many traditional cribs are made from particleboard, which can contain formaldehyde, which is a well-known carcinogen. Look for tots and cots that is constructed from solid wood or comes with a metal base instead.
