The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words so that the next generation could read them. However, many words were replaced with foreign ones, like dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

The early history of Toto, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic expansion. In the beginning of its existence, the company manufactured goods to meet demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding overseas to profit from sales and new markets. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products from other manufacturers in order to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.

In the 1990s Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and boost profits. The company employed the same just-in-time approach to its supply chain management and sales program. This led to a higher level customer satisfaction.

Toto continues to invent toilet technology. The most recent toilet features an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. The company also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets Toto produces bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more energy efficient than typical models.

The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It has exhibitions on Toto’s seminal products and their evolution, the group companies (all of which are ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and even bath units. In an additional gallery, you can see Toto products that are sold throughout. The museum also has the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.

Before forming Toto the band, members of the group performed session work for many musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia you'd expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group began as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their greatest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a massive blockbuster but not without its difficulties. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release an album that was a success or they would drop the album. Toto was able achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many contemporary artists.

This album starts off hard with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your mind. The album also contains slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and could sound like a complete flop, but works amazingly well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned for the worse. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Tours

The band has performed to millions of fans across the world, performing sold-out shows across Europe, North America and Asia, as well as Australia and New Zealand. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than earlier recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour to help promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demos and tapes in search of a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed as a double-album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which affected his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was working with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
