Bedside Crib and Travel Cot

Bedside cribs look similar to the bassinet that is attached to the side of a bed. Some have an end that can be raised for easy access, while others come with an incline that is ideal for babies who have reflux.

MFM test subject Georgina found this crib to be easy to put together and the instructions were clear, which made it an easy and quick build. It folds down to an extremely compact size and comes with a convenient travel bag.

Easy to assemble

They are small and simple to set up, so they can be placed close to your bed. They are also lighter, which makes them more mobile. Georgina, who was one of MFM's home testers said that the Maxi-Cosi Lora was "super easy to put together, with clear instructions and zips that are easy to open." This crib can be used as a portable crib, and it comes with a convenient bag. It features multiple mesh windows to allow for airflow and the adjustable height ensures it will fit any mattress.

Some cribs for bedside use a side panel which can be removed so that you can easily access your baby without getting out of bed. my explanation is an excellent option for mothers who are breastfeeding, or those who wish to remain close to their baby throughout the night but don't wish to take on the risk of co-sleeping.

Many models come with an integrated rocking feature. This can be a very relaxing experience for your baby, and can help them to sleep. Some cribs can recline in a position, which can be beneficial if your baby suffers from reflux or colic. They should only be used under supervision. A doctor or health professional should be consulted before trying this position.

Many cribs for bed have a canopy over them to protect your baby from light or noise, which can be helpful in keeping them calm. Some cribs come with a storage area underneath that is perfect for storing extra blankets, diapers and clothes for your child.

A lot of bedside cribs can be converted into toddler beds or standalone cots. This is a key selling feature for a lot of families. The Joie Roomie is the winner of the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards is a fantastic example. It comes with removable side panels, a conversion kit, and a tummy-tilt, making it ideal for travel. It also has five different height adjustments to fit your bed. It was loved by our MFM home testers for being simple to put together, comfortable and compact. The Graco Play Yard, also called a Pack and Play, is another popular option. It was nominated for the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.

Cosy and comfy

You can monitor your child from the comfort of your bed with a crib that is placed at your bedside. It's an ideal option for a mother recovering from a csection, because you can easily pull baby up to you for nappy or night feeds changes without having to get up. The most comfortable cribs come with mesh sides that let you view your baby's face through.

Some cribs lower the barrier completely, allowing the option of sleeping together without the risks (check that the crib you choose meets the latest safety requirements though). Some cribs let you lower the barrier but then lift it back up after you have lifted baby out. This is ideal for parents concerned about their child rolling off their mattress.

The Luah - which won the 2021 Mother&Baby Award for Best Crib, Cot, or Moses Basket - is designed to be attached to bedsteads and divan beds, but does require straps that are longer than other models (check the specifications to be sure that your bed will be able to fit). The large design has an opening side panel, and a patent-pending perforated bottom that creates air cushioning that increases air flow. Additionally, it has an integrated reflux setting and an swivel 360 to allow you to rotate the crib to accommodate your baby's position.

If you're seeking something smaller Tutti Bambini CoZee comes with oak legs with a variety of fabric options that will complement your decor. It's also incredibly easy to put together as Georgina, who took part in our MFM tests assembled it quickly and didn't have to look up the instructions. It's also a good travel cot, which folds flat before slipping into a handy bag.

The Next2me Magic, shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, has a larger size but is still small and simple to attach to your bed. Georgina also found it easy to assemble although she thought the instructions could have been clearer about the zips.

Easy to clean

If you're looking at bedside cribs and travel cots be sure to look for models that have a mattress cover that is removable which can be washed in the machine. This will help keep it clean from leaky nappies, baby sick and drips. It's important to choose a product that can be removed and partially dismantled to allow you access to all the corners and crevices for a thorough cleaning and sanitising.

This is essential, as it will ensure that all dirt and germs have been removed. Make sure that the sides of the crib are securely attached to ensure that your baby doesn't slide off or become trapped.

Apart from being easy to clean, you'll need an infant crib that is a comfortable place for your baby and will fit comfortably into your own bed. This is especially important in the case of a bedside crib that sleeps with your child. These cribs are designed to be attached securely to the parent's side, which gives parents to have easy access to their baby at night to feed and soothe their baby while still ensuring the safety that separate sleeping surfaces provide.

Another thing to think about when selecting a crib for your bed is whether it comes with extra features you might find useful. Some cribs tilt or rock, which is ideal for babies who tend to be fussy.

It is important to ensure that your crib or travel bed has a flat, firm mattress that fits snugly into the frame. This will lower the risk of SIDS because your baby's feet and head won't get caught in gaps or folds in the bedding.

It's also a good idea to buy a new mattress for your travel cot or crib instead of using one that was passed down from someone else or bought second-hand. Mattresses that have been used are more susceptible to lose their shape over time which increases the risk of SIDS. All cribs new to market must be compliant with BS EN1130:2019. This is the most recent standard that introduces stricter requirements to ensure the safety of your sleep and provide effective solutions.

Versatile

The bedside crib, or co-sleeping mattress as it's sometimes referred to is attached to the bed so that you can reach your baby easily at night without having to leave your sleeping area. They can be used as standalone cribs in the daytime. They usually have a side panel which can be lowered to allow you to be able to see your baby and hold the baby. Some have the option to keep the panel closed all night, which gives you the closeness and convenience of sleeping with your baby however it reduces the risk of bed-sharing. Some cribs can also be transformed into a travel cot. Other cribs come with additional features, such as rocking, tilting, or converting into a larger baby cot.

The SnuzPod 4 crib is popular for many reasons, not only because of its sleek, modern design. It comes with six height adjustments, as well as an excellent storage shelf. It's also a little heavier and bulkier than some of our cribs that are more suitable for travel, but it comes in a handy bag to keep it dust-free and clean when stored.

The instructions are simple and there's a useful toolkit to aid you. It's also easy to clean using the possibility of washing it in the machine and breathable fabric. It has a few more extras than some of the other cribs we've used including an anti-reflux incline, rocking function, and a storage pocket.

Jasmin says that this crib is great because it's "easy to reach the baby in the middle the night to provide a relaxed feeding and is larger than the majority of Moses Baskets, so it will last a longer period of time before my son gets older". It's also easy to clean and feels durable and well-made. It can be placed on a divan, making it a great option for those with small space. It also comes with a convenient carry bag to take along when travelling. A perfect all-rounder.
