ADHD Medication List

Finding the right medication to treat ADHD is often an experiment of trial and error. Ask your doctor about any side effects that are bothersome and ask if it is possible to alter the dosage or try a different drug.

Some people may be prescribed long-acting stimulants, such as Guanfacine (Intuniv) or atomoxetine (Strattera). These drugs build up slowly in the bloodstream, so they lower the risk of rebound symptoms and high blood pressure.

Methamphetamine

This medication is used to treat the condition known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It helps by increasing levels of the chemicals in the brain and nerves called dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. This helps to improve concentration, reduce the impulsiveness and restlessness, and keeps people alert. It also suppresses appetite in certain people. Methamphetamine belongs to the class of central nerve stimulants. It can only be purchased upon prescription from a doctor.

Methamphetamine abuse can lead to addiction and have serious adverse side effects. The drug can cause damage to the brain, heart, and kidneys. It also increases the risk of stroke, seizures and high blood pressure. People who use methamphetamine can develop a tolerance to the drug, meaning they will require more of it to feel its effects. It can also trigger psychological problems such as anxiety and depression.

Methamphetamine can be smoked or swallowed, or injected. When smoked, snorted or injected, the effects can be felt in three to five minutes. Snorting methamphetamine causes the "rush" or euphoria quicker than smoking. Methamphetamine is often combined with alcohol or other illegal substances. These combinations can have toxic effects or result in an overdose, which can be deadly.

Regular methamphetamine use may cause severe dental problems, chronic fatigue, skin picks and infections, as well as numerous health problems, including an increased risk of contracting hepatitis or HIV which is transmitted via sexual contact or sharing needles. Men also may be more difficult to get or maintaining an erection. They are more likely to engage in raucous or unprotected sexual activities that can result in bleeding or an STD.

Methamphetamine use during pregnancy can cause fetal abnormal development or even life-threatening rupture of the placenta and it's crucial to talk to your doctor prior to becoming pregnant or are planning to conceive. It could also be absorbed into breast milk and could cause harm to a nursing baby. It's also illegal to sell or distribute methamphetamine to anyone under age 18.

A doctor may prescribe medication that can help you recover from an ADHD treatment or meth addiction. These medications can prevent or reduce withdrawal symptoms and they can also help with the underlying causes of your issue. They can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments including behavioral therapy.

Professional treatment is the best option for those suffering with meth addiction. A comprehensive program includes individual and family counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other treatments to aid in healing and recovery from your addiction. The treatment program must include any mental illness or co-occurring disorders which may have influenced your addiction. Behavioral therapy can help you learn better ways to deal with stress and address the triggers of addiction. It can also help you learn how to manage your relationship with drugs. With the right guidance, you can live a lifetime free of addiction.

Methylphenidate

Methylphenidate, a stimulant, boosts the activity of brain areas that control attention and behaviour. It is believed that it boosts the levels of brain chemicals called dopamine, and noradrenaline. Methylphenidate can only be obtained through a prescription. It can be taken as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other treatments to treat ADHD and narcolepsy. The medication has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms for people with both conditions, especially when used along with nonpharmacologic therapies (such as social skills training for ADHD and sleep hygiene for narcolepsy).

Methylphenidate can be found in a variety of forms that include tablets, capsules chewable tablets or extended-release tablets (Ritalin IR, Adhansia XR), a liquid medicine and an orally disintegrating long-acting tablet. (Cotempla XR ODT or Quillichew). It is typically taken orally, with or without food. Depending on the form of methylphenidate you take, it is important to follow your doctor's instructions exactly. Swallow extended-release capsules whole Do not crush or break them. Liquid medicines should be measured with a specific measuring device and not a spoon from the kitchen. Tablets that chewable should be chewed prior swallowing. adhd and medication extended-release and oral disintegrating tablets should be allowed to dissolve in the mouth before being swallowed. You should not drink alcohol when taking either the ER chewable or the oral disintegrating tablet.

It is unclear whether methylphenidate is able to be passed through breast milk. Therefore it is essential to inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Methylphenidate can increase the risk of having seizures in certain individuals. Inform your doctor in the event that you have a prior history of seizures or mental health issues, such as Tourette's or bipolar disorder. Methylphenidate may trigger an increase or worsening of mental health issues in certain teens and children, including psychotic or manic symptoms. It can also aggravate depression or tics in some individuals.

Methylphenidate can interact with other medications like antidepressants and certain anticholinergic drugs and can reduce their effectiveness. It may also increase blood pressure and heart rates in certain people.

Talk to your doctor when you are taking methylphenidate with other medication. This includes medications for anxiety depression, depression, herbal treatments, and vitamins. Tell your doctor if your family history includes of sudden deaths, heart issues or high blood pressure.

Use methylphenidate only in conjunction with monoamine oxide inhibitors (MAOIs), such as isocarboxazid and linezolid. Do not combine methylphenidate and MAOIs such as rasagiline, Methylene Blue, Selegiline or Tranylcypromine. MAOIs may increase the level of methylphenidate within your body and can cause dangerous side effects. Tell your doctor whether any of these reactions occur to you, such as an allergy to aspirin or tartrazine (a yellow dye that is found in processed foods and medications; if taking Adhansia XR) or any other allergies.
