Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also known as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their babies at night, without the risk of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby is ready to be moved to an actual crib.

Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, loved the feature that this model comes with a bassinet that can be used around the home. It also features a manual rocking feature. It was also simple to put together and came in its own travel bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are smaller than. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However cots are generally intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard, which can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. If you want your child (or children) to be comfortable sleeping in the larger cot, it's a great idea to choose the larger size.

MFM mom home tester Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was slightly bigger than the Moses basket but not too big for her baby's room. She says that it is easy to get the baby into and out of the cot during evening feedings or to soothe and that it's quality is better than other cots she has seen that are less sturdy.

Another home-based test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways It's a bassinet that lifts off that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also has a reflux incline option and a machine-washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike other international or European brands. This means you do not need to purchase a new mattress every time your baby grows. However, it will require an exclusive bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.

Height

When selecting a bedside crib pick one that can be adjusted to the ideal height for you. It must also be able of being dropped down to allow you to lift your baby up towards you for night feeds or to soothe. This is especially useful in the event of recovering from a C-section. For instance, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

funny post to think about is how low you want the cot's base to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their infants from standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level and others prefer a higher elevation to provide them with more stability. One of our mom testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It comes with a collapsible side you can push at the push of the button.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device should only be used when your baby is able to hold his head without assistance, which is usually at around 6 months. This is due to the danger of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to note that if you opt for a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can be converted into a crib, you will need to start removing the sides when your child is ready for this to ensure that they don't get out of bed or fall out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs that are bedside, ranging from basic to lavish. Some of the more expensive options come with features such as an inbuilt light or a center of calm that plays music and sounds and comes with two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep. Another option is a swivelling footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. Certain models can be converted into the toddler bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

For instance, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, which won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that allows you to take your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is perfect for new mothers recovering from Caesarean births, or those who need to stay in bed for long periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made her baby much more manageable particularly after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards to be the best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than other bedside cribs that we've tested, but it folds down into its travel bag, making it compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester Also, she appreciated the bedside crib's function. She claimed that it was designed to be used by parents and children. It is easy to move and super-sturdy. She also said that the bassinet's pivoting base was a great idea since it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to make access easier, especially for new mums recovering from c-sections.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is the fact that it can be easily moved up or down so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort him or their diaper. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from an C-section. Choose a model that lets you lower one side at the press of a button. This way, you can effortlessly lift your baby without needing to get out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and more mobile. You should also avoid adding anything to the crib that increases the risk of suffocation or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC examined the possibility of imposing additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that they meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at a minimum, meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. However the CPSC found that these requirements would not be feasible or effective to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were entrapped between a bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses which can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use bedside beds to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets by using a removable attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is considering these and other comments received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
