3 Wheel Compact Stroller Review

Whether you're a fitness enthusiast seeking a jogging stroller or just seeking a stroller that is all-purpose for use in everyday life there's a compact three-wheel stroller that is suitable for you. Wendy Schmitz, Senior Review Writer and Managing Editor at Sentry tested these models to the test on both pavement and off-road surfaces. They also evaluated the seating comfort for children.

Stroller Features

The best strollers have features that make life on the go with your little one more convenient. Find features that simplify life including a big bin for storage, a tray for the parent with cup holders, a movable canopy, and more when you are shopping for the latest stroller. The key is determining what features are essential to you and your family and which ones you can be content with.

The BOB Gear Wayfinder, our top-rated jogging stroller, comes with a wide range of features to keep moms as well as dads content and comfortable. The handlebar adjusts to three different positions to accommodate caregivers of all sizes, and the wrist strap helps ensure that the stroller doesn't roll away when you're jogging. The Wayfinder comes with the largest sunshade of all the strollers we tested and a clear window at the top allows children to see out when they're resting. Jenni's 3-year-old son found the seat to have comfortable cushion, so bumps on the road didn't cause any discomfort for him.

This jogging stoller comes with an automatic handbrake that helps you keep your grip on slippery surfaces. It folds down to a slim, compact package that takes up a tiny space in the trunk of your car. Additionally, it can convert into a travel set-up with certain infant car seats from brands such as Nuna, Maxi-Cosi, and Cybex with the purchase of an adapter. It is also compatible with the Uppababy Mesa V2 bassinet.

If you plan on tackling rough terrain, sturdy tires are a must-have for strollers of all kinds. Solid tires are not as comfortable as spongy-filled or air-filled tires but they're great for navigating potholes and bumps.

The stroller folds up in just two simple steps. It locks in place when folded, and is small enough to fit into the majority of elevators. However it's not as easy to maneuver as some of our other 4-wheel strollers and the lock mechanism is a bit hazy. It requires pressing a button near the foot area on the front of stroller and then lifting the handle. We'd rather have a simpler system that simply clicks into place or opens by pulling.

Stroller Weight

The weight of the overall stroller is a significant factor to consider. A heavier stroller is more stable and will perform better on uneven terrain. However, a lot of parents find that strollers with lighter weights are easier to maneuver and is more suitable for use in everyday situations.

The size and type of the wheels is another important aspect. Some strollers, such as jogging strollers, have larger wheels that can offer a more comfortable ride for babies. However, larger wheels also increase the overall weight of the stroller, which makes it difficult to fold or transport and store.

Certain models in our collection have air-filled wheels that offer a safe, comfortable ride for your child on rough terrain. Air-filled tires are susceptible to flattening, and you must replace them. If you are planning to take your stroller with you frequently, we recommend you purchase a model with solid wheels. These tires can endure contact with various surfaces more frequently and last longer.

Strollers with swivel front wheels are great for getting around stairs and escalators in a safe manner. Falls on stairs or escalators are the most common stroller-related injuries. 3 wheel buggy can be particularly hazardous for infants. If you are unable to avoid using the escalator or stairs with your stroller, we suggest that you only use it when the child is securely strapped in the seat. Also keep them close to you while you walk up and down.

Some strollers are available as complete travel systems that includes the car seat and stroller are sold together as a single unit. While these products often boast attractive prices and offer convenience by reducing shopping time, they are generally more expensive than their stand-alone counterparts and may not function in the long haul. Many parents regret purchasing bundles because they may not come with all the features they desire or be incompatible with their car or child's seat. If you want to upgrade in the near future we suggest that you purchase a stroller that is separate from a capsule or car seat.

Stroller Folding

The most compact 3 wheel strollers fold easily and quickly to make transport and storage easy. Some even lock in the position automatically after you open them. This feature can be particularly useful for families who frequently use public transportation or drive prior to taking a an outing.

Three-wheel strollers are designed to move through tight spaces such as aisles in grocery stores and other crowded areas easily. A lot of them are equipped with suspension systems that provide a smoother ride, which is particularly useful on sidewalks that are bumpy.

The Guava Roam is a light jogging stroller. It's a stylish stroller which can be used as a travel system, with the car seat adapters for Nuna Maxi-Cosi, Nuna, and Cybex infant carseats, as well as the Uppababy bassinet (car seats and stroller boards sold separately). The stroller has an easy two-step fold that can be locked once it is it is opened.

A similar stroller with a nice design is the Babyzen Yoyo 2. The stroller is more expensive than our top choices, but worth it if you travel frequently or live in the city. This lightweight stroller can fold down to a smaller size (20.5 x 17.3 x 7.1) and comes with a padded, adjustable, five-point no-rethread harness and an ample basket. It can be used as a stroller for newborns and toddlers, if you have an adapter for infant car seats.

While the Babyzen has some nice features, like an ample recline and additional storage space, some parents have been disappointed with its performance. The seat doesn't lie flat when reclined and there's no cups or a tray for snacks for children. The brakes are difficult to engage, and the handlebar height is too high for many mothers who are short.

The Graco Fastaction is another stroller that is designed to be as light as possible without sacrificing comfort or convenience. It comes with a plethora of features, including a spacious basket and a fold that is one-handed. The only drawback is that the brakes could be difficult to activate and don't stay locked when the stroller is folded.

Stroller Safety

A stroller's safety features will aid in keeping your child safe while using it. Some of the best-scoring strollers in our review have a five-point safety harness that has adjustable and padded straps for the crotch. This allows for a customized fit. Some strollers have a padded cushion that shields your child's head if they fall off or roll out of their seat. Some strollers come with a safety brake that locks two wheels, which is especially important for jogging strollers because it prevents them from rolling over when they're going down escalators or stairs where they can be especially dangerous for children.

In our tests, strollers' maneuverability was assessed in three different ways. We scored it on the basis of a stroller's ability to turn and bounce when bumps and dips are encountered and its comfort with a child on it and its capacity to navigate over rough terrain. We also evaluated the ease of opening and closing the safety harness folding and unfolding the stroller, altering the backrest and height of the handlebar and operating the brakes as being able to attach and remove car seats (if appropriate).

We found that strollers with 3 wheels were more maneuverable however the advantages decreased as the weight of the baby increased. This is why we recommend a model that has a hand brake that helps you slow down and come to a stop with as little effort as using body power alone. However, a lot of the most efficient swivel wheel strollers come with this feature and only one of our top fixed-wheel models has it.

It's important to consider how often you will have to take your stroller on a set of stairs or an escalator, and whether or not it will be safe to do it while the stroller is in its place. Stairs and elevators can be more dangerous because they have moving mechanical components which make it difficult to control your stroller. We recommend looking for alternatives to these hazards, like an elevator, if you can or have another adult to carry the stroller up and down with you. Some of the best-scoring strollers can be pushed up the stairs or an escalator with their safety brake locked and engaged, but it's always safer to be safe than not be.
