Path of Exile Item Upgrades<br /><br />The performance of many Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading the performance of them. Alternatively, they can also be salvaged from items that have upgrade components within them by with a professional or higher salvage kit.<br /><br />The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can absorb. The upgrade of an armor piece to the highest upgrade level will increase the damage it absorbs. But, it's important to be aware that this upgrade will increase its weight, causing it to weigh more than before.<br /><br />There are several different types of armor upgrade available in the game. Each has a different effect. Certain upgrades give armor an extra amount of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The kind of armor upgrade an item can get will be identified by the name of the upgrade as shown in the table below.<br /><br />Certain upgrades require magic or a combination of technology and magic, as indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require a fee to use, which are shown by a "Charges" entry in the table below. It is not recommended to upgrade armor above +9. The added defense usually isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.<br /><br />Weapons<br /><br />Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of certain aspects of a weapon. Upgrades can increase the accuracy of a rifle, or the damage that shotgun shells do. Some weapons have special upgrades to improve their inherent qualities. The boosts to stats will differ according to the tier that the jewel is in when it is inserted into weapons, jewelry, or other gear.<br /><br />The Jeweler is able to create the highest levels of gems apart from the rare and legendary ones which require a certain level to get. Jewels can be substituted with another one without damaging the original. However, you can only replace one jewel in a piece of equipment once.<br /><br />Using more jewels in a move can make it feel more comfortable and is typically done to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. The jewels can also enhance performance and make an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so that the repeated friction caused by pivots does not cause damage to them.<br /><br /><br /><br />In addition to the upgrades mentioned above players can also obtain glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be freely swapped, but they're not guaranteed to be available as loot.
