Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also known as bassinets or co-sleepers are designed to let parents sleep close to their babies at night, without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months, after which your baby is ready to be moved to a bed.

Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, loved the fact that this model has a bassinet that can be used throughout the house. It also comes with a manual rocking feature. It was easy to set up and came with its own travel bag.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots, large and standard - which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. If you'd like your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in a bigger cot, it's an excellent idea to choose the larger one.

MFM mother home test Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was slightly bigger than the Moses basket but not too big for her baby's room. It's easy to get her baby in and out for night feeding or soothing, and that the quality is great in comparison to other cots she's seen that feel flimsy.

Another home tester, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is it's a drop-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's rocking too. It also has an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. In contrast to International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. However, it requires a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.

Height

When selecting a bedside crib pick one that can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. 4-in-1 bedside crib should also be able to be lowered to a level that is not in the way so you can raise your child towards you to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is especially helpful in the event of recovering from an operation such as a C-section. The Next2me cot and the Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch up to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is how low you want the base of your cot to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their children from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level and others prefer a higher elevation to give them more stability. One of our mom testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It is an easy-to-fold side that you can push at the touch one button.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device is only suitable when your baby is able to hold his head without assistance, which is usually about 6 months old. This is because of the risk of suffocation. It's also important to note that if you choose a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can be converted into a crib and vice versa, you must remove the sides as soon as your child is able to do this, so that they don't climb out or fall out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of bedside crib with a range of styles from simple to luxurious. Some of the most expensive options come with features like an inbuilt light or a center of calm that plays music and sounds and has two levels to help soothe your baby back to sleep or an adjustable footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. You may also find some models which can be made into the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) which is ideal when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air for instance, won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It is a swivelling base that lets you take your baby to the crib and transfer them to the other side of the crib without getting out of the bed. This is great for new mums recovering from Caesarean births or those who have to stay in bed for prolonged periods of time. Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried this product at home, stated that it was easy to use and made it easier to reach her baby, especially after having a c-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It also comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than other cribs we've tested, however it folds into its travel bag to make it compact when not in use.

MFM mom home test Leya also appreciated the function of this bedside crib, describing how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. 'It has an excellent design that is incredibly maneuverable and is super-sturdy. Its swivelling base is brilliant because it allows you to move the bassinet from side to side and one of its sides can be opened down to ease access especially for new mothers who are recovering from c-sections,' she said.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is the fact that it is able to be adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort him or his or her nappies. This is why it's perfect for mothers who still be recovering from a C-section. It is recommended to choose a design which lets you lower the bed's side with a simple button press. This will allow you to easily raise your child without having to get out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and more mobile. You should also be careful not to add anything to the crib that could increase the chance of suffocation, or injury, including pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC found, however that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing number of incidents where infants are trapped by a bedside rail and an adult bed.

The majority of the incidents covered in the NPR included multi-use bedside beds that can be transformed into other types of equipment, like bassinets or play yards. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets by using an attachment that is removable and can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is examining the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to come out in November 2021.
