Is a Bedside Crib Co Sleeper Right For Your Baby?

A bedside crib with a co-sleeper is a great choice for parents who want their baby to be close for a peaceful nighttime feeding. They are a safe alternative to traditional Moses baskets, following the official guidelines for safe sleeping from the Lullaby Trust and NHS.

Home testers love that the crib can rotate 360 degrees for easy access. It also features an adjustable mattress height to match your bed. Additionally, baby bedside sleeper folds easily and comes with a travel bag for trips away from home.

Safety

Bedside cribs are a great option to keep your baby close throughout the night without putting them at risk of suffocation or overheating. They can be attached to the sides of your bed so that you can easily reach out to soothe or feed your child in the middle of the night, and they're perfect for mothers recovering from a c-section. There's plenty to consider before you purchase one.

If you're searching for a crib to place beside your bed, ensure that the crib you pick conforms to current safety standards. A number of cribs from the past have been recalled because they let children fall through the gaps between the mattress and the sides of the crib, or they could pose a risk of strangulation and entrapment. Make sure that the crib you choose is compliant with the latest BS EN 1130:2019 safety requirement that was released in November of 2020.

The new rules prohibit cribs for bedside use from having sides that completely fall down. Instead, many models come with half-height walls that allow your baby to sleep close to your bed, but provide more of a protective barrier by sinking a little lower than the mattress. All models on our list meet the new requirements. This includes the Graco Pack 'n Play On The Go and the Chicco Lullago which were both shortlisted for the Mother&Baby Awards 2017.

Make sure that the crib is securely affixed to your bed and that it is securely fixed. This is especially crucial if you intend to use it with a sleeper that is a sidecar, such as the freestanding Graco Pack 'n Play on the go or the Graco BassiNest Premiere, which were both shortlisted for the Mother&Baby awards.

It is also important to remember that the crib should only be used for sleeping purposes and should not be used in conjunction with bedding or accessories, like blankets, pillows toys or toys for stuffed animals. The official safe sleep guidelines from the Lullaby Trust and the AAP is that infants should only sleep in their own sleep space in their crib or cot and not on an adult bed or any other mattress or soft furnishings.

Comfort

A crib for bedside use allows you to keep your child close during the night, without having to take the possibility that they could be sharing a crib with another infant. This can increase the chance of SIDS. It also means that you can easily reach out and comfort your baby in the middle of the night without having to get out of bed. It's a safe, practical and comfortable alternative to an infant Moses basket or infant bassinet for babies and infants up to 6 months old.

The best models feature excellent breathability with slats wide enough to allow air flow. They also feature a door and/or window that can be rolled up or down when needed. This makes it easier to change your baby's diaper, nurse them, or monitor them throughout the night. Some models come with a swaddle bag to help you create a safe sleeping routine.

You want a mattress that is light and compact when folded making it easy to move around your home or to take with you on your travels. The mattress cover should be able to be removed and washable, making it easy to clean. The pocket at one end can be used to store spare diapers and baby clothes.

Some cribs for bedside use the mattress, while other require you to purchase a mattress separately. Make sure the mattress is designed specifically for your model and is firm, flat and airy. Avoid second-hand mattresses since they increase the risk of SIDS.

Choose a crib that has an adjustable height that it matches the height of your own bed. A bedside crib that can be adjusted in height could be extremely beneficial to you, especially if you recovering from a C Section.

Certain models come with additional features that are useful, such as tilting the tummy to help with reflux, or detach to make a moses' basket and later toddler playpen. Other things to consider are whether the crib rocks or folds down to lay flat for storage, or comes with a bag for travel. It's also worth checking how much the model costs and what bedding is included - it's usually necessary to purchase separate sheets for your baby's bedside crib.

Style

Bedside cribs are an excellent option for new mums. They allow them to monitor their infant at night and during diaper changes without getting out of their bed. They're also great for helping babies settle after c-section, or after recovering from other medical conditions, such as colic or reflux.

Choosing the best bedside crib for your child is based on your preferences and your lifestyle. Be aware of safety features and whether you can remove your baby from the crib in order to feed or calm them. Also, make sure to check if the crib has any extras, like rocking capabilities. Also, look at the dimensions and the height of your bed, and check that any crib you pick will be able to fit comfortably.

Bedside cribs are less expensive than Moses Baskets, but they still have great features, such as breathable mesh and see through sides, incline options for reflux and adjustable height. Our favourite is the Tutti Bambini CoZee, which combines style with practicality to make the perfect co-sleeper. It comes in three colours with stylish oak legs to make it a great fit for any bedroom. Plus, it's easy to fold and assemble, and comes with a convenient travel bag for trips to the grandparents.

Some cribs have side panels that slide down to allow you to touch your baby during the day and for safer co-sleeping however, they pop up again at the night. The Arm's Reach Clear-Vue Co-Sleeper, for instance, comes with this feature, though one of our MFM home test participants found it difficult to use initially.

Any bedding you use in a crib for bed should be a good fit and must not leave any gaps that could be used as suffocation dangers. This is why a lot of cribs have a fitted mattress, but you can purchase suitable sheets at most stores. It's a good idea to avoid mattresses that are second-hand, as they may be worn out and become deteriorated over time, posing a risk of increasing the risk of SIDS.

Bedside cribs also are much lighter and more portable than Moses baskets. This makes them easier to transport from room to room, or to take when you go on trips on. The best bedside cradles are small enough to fit into the carry bag, to allow you to transport them on short trips.

Convenience

Bedside cribs allow you to look at your baby without worrying about them falling off the bed or suffocating. It is important to remember that the Lullaby Trust, NHS and other official sleep guidelines recommend you only co-sleep your baby with them for the first six month with an additional mattress in the same room to reduce the chance of SIDS.

Depending on the model you select, bedside cribs could include features that enhance their ease of use. For instance, one of the top-rated models we tested in our MFM home tests can swivel and adjusts height, making it easy for you to reach in and take your baby. The model also has a sidewall that dips down, which one MFM home tester reported gave her "easy access" to comfort their baby.

Some models have additional extras like a rocking feature (useful for fussy babies) or an incline setting to aid with reflux. These may be handy to use if your baby is suffering from a condition that causes reflux. However, be aware that your baby should sleep on a flat and firm mattress to avoid suffocation or overheating.

Consider how easy it will to clean the model. Find out if the fabric can be machine washable and if it has a waterproof protector that can protect against leaky nappies or drips. Some cribs come with a fitted sheet that makes it easier to wash and change.

Other features to consider include the ease with which it can assemble and how compact when folded away. Check if the bed is simple to put together and if it comes with an included bag to travel with. Check if the product comes with additional features, such as a tummy tilt or the capability to transform it into a Moses basket for older children. This can be useful for those who travel.
