Bedside Cosleeper

A bedside sleeper is attached to your adult bed. It's safe, so long as you comply with the CSPC safety guidelines for infant sleep spaces.

These guidelines are similar to the crib bedding standards. Find out more about the guidelines here. When selecting a bedside sleep device safety, comfort, and convenience are the most important aspects to take into consideration.

Safety

In line with the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation that infants sleep in the same room with their parents cosleeping (a practice that is also known as bed-sharing) has become popular with a lot of new and expecting parents. The Academy states that room-sharing with a baby is less risky than sleeping in the same bed as parents, as it reduces the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SIDS). The AAP doesn't recommend bed sharing however, it does suggest that sleeping on a separate sleeping surface is a good way to reduce the risk of SIDS. The development of the bedside crib was essential for a number of families.

A bedside cosleeper is a similar to a crib sleeper that attaches to an adult bed frame. The bedside cosleeper lets parents monitor the baby and allows them the option of sleeping in their own bed. The most reliable cosleepers meet strict safety standards and are made with sturdy, high-quality materials. To ensure your child's safety, look for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association stamp of approval. This proves that the product has been tested thoroughly and quality control.

The security of a cosleeper for the bed depends on several factors such as the way it is set up and connected to the parent's bed. If the bedside sleeper is not attached to the parent's bed in a manner that eliminates the gaps and spaces in which an infant can become trapped, it could be an hazard of suffocation. It is important that the attachment system of a bedside crib be tested to verify it can withstand the force that may be applied in the course of use, for example, parents rolling onto and off the sleeper, or a 25-lb. horizontal force applied to the attachment system or to the corners of the bedside cosleeper.

The voluntary standard for bedside cribs is based on, the federal consumer safety standards for bassinets (16 CFR part 1218) and the requirements for performance for closed fabric openings. The standard's mandatory requirements also address the danger of neck and head entrapment by requiring that, after the application, release a 50-lb. horizontal force near the attachment system and the corners of the bedside sleeper gaps greater than 1.0 in. must not be created. Read-only copies of the standard can be found at ASTM's online Reading Room.

Convenience

Many parents do not allow cosleeping because they are afraid of suffocation or SIDS, or because it is an act of "Ferberization", which forces children to sleep alone. Anthropologists have observed for a long time that many primates, mammals and people from other cultures sleep regularly. This is because babies are soothed by hearing the voice of their mother, and may also learn to soothe themselves.

bedside cot newborn feature an innovative design that is attached on the side of any mattress and can swivel so that you can access it easily for feedings or diaper changes during the middle of the night. Choose one with feet that are adjustable and retract to accommodate different mattress heights and a large storage compartment for all your baby's necessities.

Choose a bedside crib that is compatible with the standard crib bedding, so that it's safe to use as your child grows. You may also want to consider a convertible model that can transform into a play yard or a deeper bassinet for years of use, and folds easily for transport.

Portability

Depending on the size of your bedroom a bedside sleeping system with wheels and/or a light base may be easier to move around your home than one with a heavy wood frame or large base. The babybay bedside sleeper, HALO bassiNest essencetia and Snoo Smart Sleeper are all portable. They have adjustable feet that retract to fit platform mattresses and legs that fold inwards so that they are in close proximity to the mattress; and 100% mesh sidewalls to allow ventilation without covering the baby's nose or mouth.

The Arm's Reach Clear-Vue is a popular option that adjusts in 1" increments to fit in most adult beds. It can also be used as a portable bassinet. It also swivels to allow for easy access to your baby to soothe her, feed her, or check on them during the night.
