Driving Licence B1<br /><br />Driving licence B1 is a restricted version of the B category. It allows drivers to drive small vehicles like vans and lorries. It is however expensive and requires a practical state-wide examination.<br /><br />If your license is B1 Auto, you can only tow small vehicles with an automatic gear box like cars or small vans. You cannot operate a manual vehicle using this licence, so you'll have to retake the driving test and obtain another licence to be able to tow larger vehicles. You can also get the category B license that allows you to tow a vehicle up to 3,500kg.<br /><br />If your license is code 96, you are able to also tow the vehicle. This type of licence entitles you to drive a vehicle with a MAM up to 3500kg and to tow a trailer up to 750kg. The trailer size depends on the date of issue of your BE licence.<br /><br />In the same way you can tow a trailer of up to 750kg when your license is B1 with code 96 or BE. You can also tow a trailer that is designed to transport horses or boats. This type of trailer, also referred to as a lorry mounted trailer, is typically attached to a truck or tractor.<br /><br />The first type was a class 3 driving licence, which allowed for the use of trailers. However the licence has since been rewritten into the BE licence and now only permits you to drive a trailer up to a a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVM) of 7.5 tonnes.<br /><br />The B license is a fantastic option for drivers who plan to own their vehicles but don't intend to make use of them for commercial reasons. The B license is available for commercial or private vehicles that have up to nine seats and allows the driver a tow trailer that weighs up to 775kg.<br /><br />Vehicles you cannot tow with a B2 license<br /><br />The B1 driving licence is a less restrictive version of the B category driving license. It allows you to drive vehicles that weigh up to 400kg (or up to 550kg if the vehicle is designed for transporting goods). This licence is not applicable to vans or trucks, however you are still able to drive small commercial vehicles like light trucks, cargo carriers and trailers. You must have been accident-free for at least five years and 41 days prior to your birthday when your driver's license expires. You must also pass the theory test and the practical driving test.
