Buying a Tandem Double Buggy

A tandem double buggy can be a great choice if you have twins, or children who are close in age. They're narrower than side-by-side buggies and are ideal for maneuvering tight spaces such as doors, on public transport and rocky terrain.

Some are able to be converted into travel systems that take two carrycots or car seats for children. They are often heavier, longer and less stable than a single pushchair.

Convertible

If you're looking for a convertible stroller that can be converted from a single to a double or to add an additional seat to an existing one, there's several options available. The Vista V2 from UPPAbaby is spacious, gorgeous stroller that can easily be converted from a single model to a double by adding the rumble seating (available separately). It is more expensive and less maneuverable because the second seat is located on top of the first seat. The Nuna Demi Grow is a similar option with great seating flexibility, however it does not have storage under the seat when used in doubles mode.

Other alternatives include twin buggies with all-terrain wheels and joggers with fixed wheels that can be used to carry two kids. These are more expensive, but they are made for long trips on rough terrain and have higher resale prices.

Reclining the seat independently

If you're looking for a double stroller which can accommodate children of various age groups, you'll require one with a recliner that is independent for both seats. This will allow your child's older to rest in the back while the baby sleeps in the bassinet and the reverse.

Think about the width of your pushchair, as this will determine the ease of you to get through doors and public transportation. If you have extremely narrow doors, it could be a good idea to consider a side-byside pushchair such as the Mountain Buggy Duet which has the benefit of having a footprint comparable to a single buggy, however, it is able to use two seats and car seat adaptors.

Tandem buggies are typically larger than side-by-side models, making them more difficult to maneuver around and down kerbs. However they can also accommodate a wider range of combinations of seats/carrycots/car seats and can make the perfect choice for twins and siblings of various age. They also tend to be more expensive than single-to-double buggies, but are a good purchase if you plan to keep it for a long time and have a good amount of resale value in the event that you decide to sell it off when your children have grown out of it.

This feature will allow you to place your child in an ideal position for naps or to observe. This is especially important if you have a young child in the rear seat who will be inclined to lie down and sleep while the more mature child wants to sit up and observe their surroundings.

Some brands feature an exclusive seat design that allows the back seat to fully recline to an almost flat position which is perfect for babies. For instance, the iCandy Orange has raised stadium-style seating that can recline both the included toddler seat and the additional RumbleSeat into multiple positions to give your kids a the option of deciding where they will sit, as well as providing an excellent UPF 50+ canopy that has peekaboo windows.

Wider than twin buggies

They are great for siblings with different ages, and you can get around without having to worry about your children touching. They are usually a little bit longer, with one seat behind the other. The seats can be reclined fully for newborns or in an upright position for toddlers.

Mountain Buggy Duet is a popular option. It has the slimmest design that is side-by-side and a footprint comparable to one stroller. It also features an adjustable handle, making it easy for parents of different heights to push, and an adjustable handbrake, which is useful when tackling steep hills. It is suitable from birth and is compatible with a variety of car seats and carrycots. This means it is a great travel system.

Another option is the iCandy Wave, which has an easy one-click fold and can be used in mono or duo mode. Its clever frame expands widthways to allow for a second seat and can be used with two car seats or carrycots making it a great option for older siblings that want to sit in a group and enjoy the view. It's a bit longer than other models but still feels easy to steer and has soft suspension that is able to handle the kerbs.

There are also plenty of 3-wheeler tandems inline available such as Phil and Teds inline models or iCandy's Peach and Pear buggies for instance they provide stability and quick steering. They can be folded into one buggy if you have limited space at home or you need to carry it from the car to the bus.

It's worth bearing in mind that a wide double buggy will be heavier and bulkier than a smaller single buggy So make sure you're getting what you need before you purchase. You'll be taking it off and on trains, buses and subways regularly so it needs to be easy to use and manage. You might also have to juggle it onto and off the car seat when you take your children to nursery or school so you'll need to know it can be easily manoeuvred in tight spaces.

From birth

Whether you're expecting twins or have a second child after your first, you're likely to need to find a pushchair that fits the entire family. Double buggies are typically heavier and bulkier, as well as more expensive than single strollers. However they are much more maneuverable in narrower doors and around obstacles such as curbs. They are also compatible with piggyback ride-along boards (either from the manufacturer or as an additional accessory purchase) so you can transport three children at a time.

Tandem pushchairs put one child in front of the other. They are a good option for children who are similar in age and get along well. They're not 100% secure. Siblings who are sitting side-by-side could punch or kick one another and children of different heights may fight over who sits taller. A tandem high-low model can solve this issue by elevating the seat towards the rear, preventing your older child from being sat on the bottom and not having much of a view.

The iCandy Wave is a great option for parents looking for an easy-to-use convertible double buggy that can fit a newborn into a carrycot as well as an older child in the main seat. It has a clever frame that expands in width when you add a second seat. It folds flat to make it a compact storage. The padded seats are comfortable, the straps are easy to secure and the buckles are among the best we've seen on any of our tests. The canopies are large in size with UPF 50+ protection, and peekaboo window. Both seats can recline independently.

The only drawback of the iCandy is that it's on the expensive side but a high-quality tandem will last for years and retain its resale value, which means you'll probably recoup some of the cost in the end. The iCandy doesn't have the same seating options as our other top selections. However, it's an ideal choice for families who don't wish to spend lots of cash.
