The name of the group came from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.

In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It was a huge project that required the entire group to be involved. Kingdom of Desire was another success album. After a world tour drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen from Le Roux. The band continued with their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album had a host of songs such as "Stranger in Town".

After Isolation Toto went on a hiatus. This gave every member of the band the opportunity to explore their individual projects. In 1996, the band reformed to tour and record an album. Drummer Shem von Schroeck stepped in however the group was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes.
