3 Wheeler Buggies

A tri-wheeled stroller is ideal for off-road terrain and provides a smooth ride for baby. They are also easier to move and push than a four-wheel buggy particularly those with fabric sling seats or modular seats that are set snugly in the frame, delivering the most efficient geometry and weight distribution.

3 wheel pushchair -wheeled vehicles are very stable, which makes them an excellent option for off-road walks (especially when they are equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). They often feature oversized front wheels, which can cope well with bumps and kerbs as well as rough ground. Some models even feature a lockable front tire to provide extra stability on uneven terrain.

It is important to remember that 3-wheel buggies may have a lower center of gravity than models with four wheels and this can mean that they can tip over more easily. However, the most reliable 3-wheel pushchairs are designed with an ideal geometry and design to ensure that they remain solid in all conditions. They should be able to turn at a whim and be easy to steer with one hand and have the front wheel rotate 360o that makes them great for maneuvering and navigating difficult terrain.

For extremely difficult surfaces you should look for a model with air-filled tyres, also known as pneumatic tyres, which are designed to handle non-paved tracks and should cope with dirt, gravel, and so on. Many all-terrain buggies include a swivelling wheel on the front which can be locked for added stability when tackling very rough terrain.

A tri-wheeled pram is a great option for those who run and love to speed up the hill. This is especially true if you plan to attach an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a world-facing seat that reclines flat and comes with a new 5-point harness as well as storage space for all your kit (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's compact, lightweight and suitable for babies and can be used with car seats or a carrycot. It can also be used for light jogging but is not intended for serious runners.

Weight

If you are looking for a buggy that can tackle difficult terrain, then you should select one with big tires. They will be able to handle cobbles, grass and dirt tracks, and provide a smooth ride for any passenger. They are also ideal for jogging because they come with built-in suspension and are able to climb up and down kerbs. The trade-off is that they're quite heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the most suitable 3 wheel buggy to use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheel buggy is very maneuverable due to its 16 rear wheels as well as the front wheel can be locked. It has air tyres which do need occasional pumping and can hold children up to the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler liked the design of the seat and found it easy to steer with her 3-year-old on the seat.

Another option that is great is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, that comes with an adjustable handlebar and a high-quality hood with 50+ UV protection. It is also easy to move kerbs upwards and downwards, and can fit into the boot of a car that is small. It can be used as a stroller with a carrycot for newborns or toddlers.

Fabric slings are set in the frame and not on top of the frame like modular seats. This style has a lower centre-of-gravity at the ideal height. It is simpler to push and lighter to kerb-pop (you don't know how many times you'll do that as a brand new parent!).

Seating

The capacity for seating of 3 wheelers is impressive and there are many different choices to choose from. The carrycot included is perfect for newborns (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a cozy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used both in and out of the buggy). Older infants and toddlers will appreciate the spacious and comfortable seat with adjustable ventilation. The seats don't recline fully, but they can be lowered to the lowest setting. This should allow your child plenty of space and headroom.

A sling seat made of fabric is also available, which is placed snugly within the frame instead of on top like a modular seat and this provides a lower center of gravity and perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this style of seat handled challenges.

In addition to a big shopping basket, this type of buggy generally has very useful features like an extended 50+ UV hood, an easy-to-use brake pedal, and some game-changing visibility lights that pop up from the handlebars and can be placed directly in front of the occupants to improve their safety when traversing difficult terrain.

If you're seeking a single stroller that can adapt to your family's needs, there's the brand-new sport(tm) which is the first of its kind to take one baby from day one and adapt to take 2 or even 3 after your baby has grown and all within the footprint of one buggy.

Storage

The 3-wheeled frame makes a buggy more stable to push one handed and also perfect for handling difficult terrain. The shopping basket is smaller than a 4-wheeler.

A high-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for better comfort, and an excellent suspension. It will be able to accommodate a car seat, which means you can use it from the time of birth.

MFM's reviewers have discovered that the 3-wheeler frame doesn't pass through all doors in their homes or small car booties - make sure you know the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded prior to purchasing if you're worried about space.

It's worth looking for an SUV with three wheels that can fit 2 (or even 3!) seats once your family grows - these are the most efficient of both and future proof your money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most sought-after. It can be used from day dot as a single buggie and then converted into twin buggies after your baby begins walking.

Tyres

These tyres cushion bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's journey more comfortable. They are commonly used on pushchairs such as the Phil & Ted's Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an exceptional ride for her toddler". She also said that the grippy tyres on the Phil and Ted's Sport made it simple for her to negotiate the kerbs and other obstacles.

These tyres can sometimes prove difficult to maintain and must be replenished regularly. These tyres are more prone to punctures, so you should always carry an repair kit and spare inner tube with you when you're out and about.

PU tyres are found on more pushchairs than air-filled tyres but they're still as durable. PU tyres are easily identified by their matte finish and supple feel. They also glide well on even and tied surfaces.

You can usually identify the distinction between air-filled and PU tyres by running your hand over each one. If it feels hard, then it's rubber and If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also confirm whether your buggy has PU tyres by slipping the tyres onto an even, clean surface - they'll be able to roll easily and fit snugly in their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are able to withstand the rough terrain of high-performance buggies. This can make your buggy less stable as the foam will lose its springy quality. The tyres can also be noisy because they generate a lot noise when you turn and drive around the town.
