Types of ADHD Medications

ADHD medications can reduce symptoms by enhancing the way that neurons transmit messages. Certain types of medication increase neurotransmitters, others slow down the reuptake process.

Stimulants

The majority of stimulants used to treat ADHD are methylphenidates (including Ritalin) or amphetamines. They can be effective within 20 minutes, and last for about four hours. They are available in liquid, pill, or patch form.

Stimulants

Stimulants are the most commonly used kind of prescription medication that healthcare providers employ to treat ADHD. They work by increasing the levels of certain chemicals within the brain (neurotransmitters). These neurotransmitters help people focus, think and manage their emotions. When people suffering from ADHD are prescribed stimulant medications they usually notice that their symptoms are less severe. It could take a while for a doctor to determine the appropriate dosage and medication for each individual.

Stimulant medications may be taken in liquid or pill form. They are typically taken once or twice daily. Some are immediate release, which means they start working right away. Some are extended-release, and are able to work for a longer period. The majority of stimulants prescribed by doctors for ADHD belong to the methylphenidate class. The most frequently prescribed methylphenidate is Adderall. Other brand names include Concerta, Ritalin and Focalin.

Amphetamines are also sometimes used to treat ADHD, but they have a more amplifying effect than the methylphenidates. In the past, these substances were abused by truck drivers, athletes, and students because of their ability to keep people awake and alert. Iampsychiatry decrease appetite and increase the heart rate and blood pressure. Certain doctors will only prescribe this medication group to children suffering from severe symptoms who don't respond well to other treatments.

Atomoxetine is a different medication which has been proven to be effective in treating ADHD. It blocks reuptakes of the chemical noradrenaline, which helps pass messages between neurons. Atomoxetine can be given to adults, teens and children who are older than five years old, if Lisdexamfetamine and methylphenidate aren't available. It's available as a tablet that releases immediately or a controlled-release capsule taken once or twice a day.

The adverse effects of stimulant medications may include upset stomach and heart rate fluctuations or blood pressure, as well as Tics. Tics are sudden, repeated movements or sounds that resemble eye blinking or throat clearing. The majority of people who use stimulants do not experience Tics, however some teens and children who are taking them may experience them. Other side effects of stimulant medications are headaches, a loss of appetite and trouble sleeping.

The medication is only one part of the treatment program for ADHD. Other treatments include psychotherapy behavior therapy, training for skills, and lifestyle modifications. These treatments can be paired with medication to maximize the benefits for ADHD patients.

Treatment for ADHD continues throughout adulthood. Many people suffering from the condition continue to require medication, therapy for behavioral issues and/or skills training as they get older.

The National Resource Center for ADHD provides information and resources.

The FDA recommends that health professionals closely monitor patients taking ADHD medication. This is to ensure the correct dosage is being administered, and that the medication is having a positive effect on the person's symptomatology. Regular doctor's appointments are necessary to monitor for negative reactions or other health issues. During these visits, a doctor will ask about any other medicines the patient is taking, such as prescription and nonprescription drugs as well as over-the counter medicines, supplements, and herbal remedies.
