Because it functions as a microwave and a traditional oven it is able to heat leftovers, frozen foods and pre-packaged meals all in one appliance. It also eliminates the requirement for an additional countertop appliance or large wall ovens that are stand-alone. A combination microwave oven can also be a good choice for those who want to modernize your kitchen without having to undergo any major remodeling projects.

There are microwave ovens that come in a variety of styles to match your kitchen's decor. Some have a right-to-left swing-out door, whereas others feature a drop-down style that opens in the same manner as an oven that is traditional. You can also find microwave ovens that have the drawer design that opens like cabinets. Microwave drawers are easily reached and are great for small space.

Combination microwaves can also offer various features that aid in meal preparation and more efficient. For instance, some models have sensors for steam cycles that automatically adjusts the time and temperature of your food items to ensure that you receive perfect steamed fish and vegetables. Other features include a broil element that lets you quickly melt cheese or cook your favorite food, as well as Crispwave(tm) technology that lets you grill food items, bake and crisp them.

Consider how often you'll utilize each feature before deciding on a microwave-oven combination. If you will be using the oven more often than the micro, you may prefer an extra wall oven. A combo oven has less capacity than an oven that is a standalone unit.

After you've picked the ideal microwave and oven combination for your needs, it's time to consider the installation. Over-the-range models are mounted over your cooktop or stove and connect to an electrical outlet, while built-in microwaves can be plugged directly into the walls or cabinets of your kitchen. Some models even have trim kits that let you effortlessly match your new microwave with your kitchen cabinets.

Energy Efficiency

A built in microwave oven combination can be an ideal space-saving solution for those who have smaller kitchens, whether they reside in a house or apartment. They can save on cabinet space that would otherwise be occupied by two separate appliances and they can also help to reduce energy consumption. They are more energy efficient than traditional wall-mounted ovens and offer an efficient method to cook. They can also be used to cook food and warm food items. integrated microwave ovens means that there is less necessity for other appliances such as toasters or warming plates.

When evaluating possible amendments to energy conservation standards, DOE conducts several analyses that include market and technology assessment, screening analysis, engineering analysis, and national impacts analysis (NIA). For this SNOPR, DOE will rely on its current engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine the highest level of efficiency improvements that are technically feasible for this particular product class.

DOE will compare the design of a microwave to the energy performance goals set in the engineering analysis. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.

As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the impacts on consumers for every product category, including lifecycle cost savings as well as simple payback periods ("PBP"). DOE will utilize its Government Regulatory Impact Model with an adaptation for microwave ovens to calculate the industry's net present value ("NPV").

DOE will also examine the impact on manufacturers and will use an industry-specific cash flow model adapted to this product type in order to estimate manufacturing NPV. In addition, DOE will consider the potential impacts on small business manufacturers and other subgroups of manufacturers to identify any that may be affected in a different way by these proposals.

Additionally, DOE will consider whether the tests for microwave ovens should be revised to include active mode energy use and an integrated active mode energy use measure. Currently, the test protocols only address the use of standby mode power.

Design

Microwaves produce heat by causing water molecules vibrate in food. Wall ovens are based on the circulation of hot air while microwaves depend on waves to cause food molecules to vibrate. Combination wall ovens blend these two different appliances into a single unit that helps save kitchen space and gives sleek, modern design. But you need to carefully take into consideration your budget and goals before investing in a combo wall oven. A few of the combo wall ovens that we've rated have issues with performance or design.
