Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

A light double pushchair makes it simple to get around, particularly if you have children of various age groups. They are easy to fold, steer and carry up and down the stairs.

This City Mini GT2 features side-by-side seating with plenty of legroom. It also has adjustable reclining, large UPF 50+ canopies and windows that peek out. It also has a clever frame that expands widthways to accommodate a second car seat and compatible car seat(s).

Side-by-Side

The majority of the lightweight double pushchairs that we tested were side-by-side models. They are ideal for children who can stand up without assistance, as they lack compatibility with car seats. The Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double, are both excellent choices. They have adjustable recline for both seats, a huge canopy, and padded 5-point safety harnesses. They are also easy to maneuver despite their bigger footprint. They are perfect for parents who worry about fitting through doors.

The Cybex Duet is a little different due to its clever frame that expands widthways to add an additional seat, which makes it lighter than other pushchairs with side-by-side seating on the market. This means it can fit through standard doorways and is easy to maneuver on public transport. It can also be used as an jogger which is perfect when you are planning to use it with an infant car seat or a baby carrier.

Another excellent side-by-side lightweight double is the UPPAbaby Vista v2 Double, that offers more customization with a modular frame. It features a clever design that lets you transform it into a single stroller or a double by adding 2 carrycots or car seats (it can even take twins). It is a practical option for families growing. The UPPAbaby umbrella stroller is also one of the lightest, sexiest and most stylish available.

Try the egg2 that folds down to the size and weight of a small suitcase. It can be used as a single or a double with the addition of 2 carrycots or infant car seats and our home testers were awed by how simple and sleek it was to use even when loaded with kids.

Double pushchairs with side-by-side seating aren't foolproof, though -when your children are the same age or stage, they might still argue over who gets to ride in which seat. If they are at different heights then it is possible that a tandem design is ideal for them as it lets them face each other.

Tandem

While side-by-side models are best suited to siblings with similar age group, tandem light double strollers come with distinct appeals. They can be fitted with a larger car seat, and some even have convertible seats or an additional carrycot in the middle. They are bigger, and easier to get into and out of. However the baskets they use tend to be smaller than those on buggies that are single. They often have larger canopy, peekaboo windows and even padding for the leg cushions.

The iCandy Peach tandem is another great example of a lightweight tandem that is a great value. The fabric is a bit less luxurious than those of some of our top-rated doubles. However, it still looks fantastic and is simple to use. Its one-handed folding is awe-inspiring. While it requires some practice, Kirstie from our Lab described it as "genius". The carrycot can't be folded when it is attached. However, the process to attach and remove the carrycot is easy and quick.

Tandem pushchairs that are lightweight generally have tighter turns than side-by-side models, but they can be more difficult to drive over bumps and uneven surfaces. best compact double stroller are also slightly slower to speed up and are heavier to move, which could cause stress on your back.

A convertible double buggy is another option. It starts out as one, but you can add adapters to convert it into double. This can include an additional seat or carrycot in the front or children can sit side-by-side. Some of them also have the option of incorporating a buggy board, which can aid older children keep up with younger siblings.

The Uppababy Vista V2 is a great example of a convertible as it can also convert into a twin pram with the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) which create a lay-flat area for infants. These can be placed in a row or joined to one another and you can use them in conjunction with the baby car seat that comes with the pushchair (as long as you choose a compatible one). These dual-use buggies are made of quality materials and can be used for a long time without showing any wear. This means they have an excellent resale value.

Single-to-Double

This light double buggy was designed for families who love the outdoors and are looking to upgrade from a single-stroller. It can be transformed into a jogger with kits that include air-filled tires and all-wheel suspension. It can also withstand rough terrain well and is a tandem triple is suitable for twins or children of various ages. It's also a good option for parents who want an elegant design that's as sleek as a single, and is available in a range of fabrics.

We loved the way this iCandy model folds up using a single-hand mechanism that's very easy to master. It's heavier than other single-to-double pushchairs, but our home test Karolina says it's still very capable of maneuvering even with two toddlers inside and the carrycot.

The seat can be used as a parent-facing, and you can also buy add-ons for this stroller such as the Roma Gemini carrycots (PS100 each) that are perfect for infants. Our test panel found that the seats were comfortable for toddlers, with good lumbar support and headrests. There are a variety of options to recline the seats with the front seat adjustable in different positions and the back seat having a reclining option.

The biggest drawback of this type of buggy is that it tends to be larger overall than the side-by-side doubles and makes it difficult to get through doorways and can be difficult to maneuver around kerbs. The wheels and suspension of these strollers are generally able to cope with pavements. They're also lighter than many side-by-sides, so you can still get a lot of storage. It's important to remember that these strollers aren't as efficient in navigating narrow aisles in supermarkets and can struggle to cope with a lot of shopping. Although it's much easier to turn the stroller around on a small curved path, this can still be a challenge. Some are also more easy to turn than others, like the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double, for example.

Convertible

The great thing about convertible double pushchairs is the ability to adapt to the changing family requirements. They are typically single buggies and have adapters that allow you to add a second child's seat or a carrycot (in certain instances) an automobile seat to the frame. Some even convert to a single when your child gets older and starts to walk or prefers to ride on a buggy board.

This stylish tri-fold double stroller is among of the lightest strollers on our list. It can carry up to 40 pounds per child, and includes an integrated storage basket between the seats. The large canopy with a peekaboo window, multi-position reclining chairs as well as front and back suspensions for smoother rides on rough terrain were well-loved by home testers. It also comes with a handy cup holder for parents and a large, easy-to access basket. However, they noted that the backs of the seats have small pockets that aren't large enough to hold more than a phone and keys.

This lightweight, high-end side-by-side is available in more than 20 configurations. It also includes a second chair and carrycot. Its impressive feature set includes an ergonomic handlebar with a high profile for better steering as well as rear and front suspensions to smooth rough terrain; a self-standing, compact fold with handy straps for easy schlepping; and seven-inch swivel lock front wheels and 10-inch rear wheels with suspension for a smoother ride. The only drawback is that you'll need to purchase an additional car seat or baby carrier.

This multi-functional tandem is the top choice of our home testers due to the fact that it is simple to maneuver and features a large shopping basket that can be accessed from both seats when in the parent-facing position. Its extremely lightweight weight (about the same as single pushchairs) makes it easy to move. Reversible seats mean you can switch them around to face either direction, and the clever way it attaches a second seat or riding board to the rear is highly praised by many. Parents also appreciated the fact that it can accommodate infant carriers and car seat from a variety of brands. This includes those that aren't normally compatible with other double buggies.
